There's a whole section of rules on lunar days in Jyotish that take into consideration such phenomenon as Shoonya ("uselessness", "infertility") Tithi. Basic rule says that Shoonya Tithis are inauspicious and the one fails to achieve any success in works started during such kind of Tithi.
There are 3 types of combinations that create Shoonya Tithis:
  • certain Maasa (vedic month) + certain Tithi,
  • certain Nakshatra (constellation) + certain Tithi,
  • certain Lagna (ascendant) + certain Tithi.
Thus, if one of such "Shoonya" combinations exists for a certain period of time,  this period becomes very inauspicious for starting any work and should be avoided. Tables with all Shoonya Tithi combinations are given below:

Taking into consideration everything mentioned above, during the vedic month Vaishakha Krishna Dwadashi becomes Maasa Shoonya Tithi. Ashlesha Nakshatra also activates Tithi Shoonya state if it falls on Krishna Dwadashi. Lagna (ascendant or rising sign) during Krishna Ekadashi becomes Tithi Shoonya for times when it is Dhanu (Sagittarius) or Meena (Pisces).

Sūrya (Sun) is Devata which rules Saptami (according to Muhurta Chintamani and Poorva Kalamrita). All actions done in respect of Sūrya (health, king, governmental works, helping father etc) are acceptable during this day. According to another classical text, Brihat Samhita, Saptami is ruled by Indra, king of all other Devatas.
